With the colder weather coming—the fireplace becomes more important in our lives.

Yet it should be a focal point all year long. It creates a sense of home, provides warmth and invites people in to the room. Sometimes it just needs a little help.

Before & After ImageSURROUND IT WITH STORAGE
This family room’s fireplace was initially out of the way and pretty much ignored.By relocating the TV, we were able to open up the room so that everyone could enjoy the fireplace and the TV. Built-in bookshelves added much needed storage space for the active family’s games and toys.

AVOID AWKWARD SEATING ARRANGEMENTS
Fireplaces that take up an entire wall can create awkward seating arrangements. Plus, the traditional mantle just didn’t evoke the feeling this couple was looking for.
To update a fireplace like this, we chose a clean smooth tile that framed the new gas insert. Not only did it bring the room up to date, it also eliminated the need for a more traditional, raised hearth.

CREATE A UNIQUE LOOK
Stacked stone covered this brick fireplace. To make the most of the height, three mantles provided a unique look going up the fireplace, with a new granite hearth lending the room some current style.
