The New Keeping Room
Located adjacent to the kitchen a keeping room gives loved ones the chance to keep the cook company.
Keeping rooms hail back to colonial times, when they were a popular space thanks to the heat from the kitchen that kept the room warm. A plus for company that also kept them out of the cooks way.
We mentioned before that kitchens are the heart of the home and people tend to gravitate towards it. Family and friend get together here. And when it is possible to have gatherings again, we will all once again end up in the kitchen of family and friends.
Our client’s family enjoyed their designated space in the kitchen. The fireplace – a nod to the hearth of the colonial times – added warmth and ambiance. It was a popular place to enjoy a drink before or after a meal.
But this room needed to have a cozier feel. We started by eliminating the TV surround and adding cozy swivel chairs to replace the uncomfortable ones.
Soothing blues created a relaxing atmosphere. The desk was replaced with a console that added interest and a place for better lighting.
The heavy window treatments stepped aside to make way for relaxed Roman shades in a bright pattern.
The area rug not only softened the room, it is stain resistant and will serve them well for many years. The ottoman provides a spot to put your drink, an extra seat in a pinch or a place to rest your feet after a long day. Now this is truly a place to enjoy.
